Volgend jaar dingt Lukas Dhonts Girl mee naar de Oscar voor beste niet-Engelstalige film. De Belgische inzending krijgt concurrentie van kleppers als Alfonso Cuaróns Gouden Leeuw-winnaar Roma (Mexico), Matteo Garrone’s Dogman (Italië), Pawel Pawlikowski’s Cold War (Polen), Ali Abassi’s Gräns (Zweden) en Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Gouden Palm-winnaar Shoplifters (Japan).

Intussen werden alle inzendingen bekendgemaakt. In totaal nemen 87 landen deel aan de competitie, vijf minder dan het recordaantal van vorig jaar. Malawi en Niger zijn er voor het eerst bij met respectievelijk The Road to Sunrise van Shemu Joyah en The Wedding Ring van Rahmatou Keïta.
