De officiële competitie van de 71e Berlinale gaat door van 1 tot 5 maart en ondertussen is de selectie onthuld. Onder meer Petite maman, de nieuwe film van Portrait de la jeune fille en feu-regisseuse Céline Sciamma, zal meedingen naar de Gouden Beer.

Ook Albatross van Xavier Beauvois (Des hommes et des dieux), Introduction van Hong Sang-soo (The Woman Who Ran) en I’m Your Man van Maria Schrader (Unorthodox) met Toni Erdmann-actrice Sandra Hüller zijn geselecteerd.

Verder worden buiten competitie Next Door, het regiedebuut van Captain America: Civil War-acteur Daniel Brühl, Kevin MacDonalds The Mauritanian met Tahar Rahim en Jodie Foster, en Azazel Jacobs French Exit met Michelle Pfeiffer en Lucas Hedges vertoond.
