In Los Angeles heeft men de genomineerden bekendgemaakt voor de 88ste editie van de Oscars. De namen van de kanshebbers werden live aangekondigd door Guillermo del Toro, Ang Lee, John Krasinski en Cheryl Boone Isaacs, het hoofd van de Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS).

De categorie Beste Film bestaat dit jaar uit de titels The Big Short, Bridge of Spies, Brooklyn, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Martian, The Revenant, Room en Spotlight.

Le Tout Nouveau Testament van Jaco Van Dormael kreeg geen nominatie in de categorie Beste Niet-Engelstalige film. Het Colombiaanse Embrace of the Serpent, met Jan Bijvoet in een hoofdrol, maakt wel kans op een beeldje. Ook de kortfilm Bad Hunter van de Vlaamse-Koerdische filmmaker Sahim Omar Kalifa greep naast een nominatie.

De uitreiking van de Academy Awards vindt plaats op 28 februari in het Dolby Theatre te Hollywood. Gastheer van dienst is Chris Rock.
