De Producers Guild of America (PGA) heeft de nominaties van zijn jaarlijkse awards onthuld. De Belgische productie Sound of Metal dingt mee naar de hoofdprijs, de Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures.

Sound of Metal zal het opnemen tegen onder meer Nomadland, die onlangs de Golden Globe voor Beste Film – Drama en de Critics Choice Award voor Beste Film won.

Aangezien veel leden van de Producers Guild of America ook van de Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences lid zijn, worden de PGA Awards als een belangrijke voorbode van de Oscars beschouwd.

Sinds de eerste uitreiking van de PGA Awards in 1989 werd elke winnaar van de Darryl F. Zanuck Award genomineerd in de Oscarcategorie Beste Film. Van die tweeëndertig films wisten er ook eenentwintig de Oscar voor Beste Film te winnen.

Bovendien gebruiken de PGA en de Academy sinds 2009 een gelijkaardig stemsysteem, waardoor doorgaans zeven tot negen van de genomineerden voor de Darryl F. Zanuck Award ook een Oscarnominatie voor Beste Film krijgen.
