De regisseur van onder meer Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle versloeg Travis Knight (Bumblebee) en Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) en vervangt Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland).

Serkis is vooral bekend van zijn motion capture-rollen als Gollum in de Lord of the Rings– en Caesar in de Planet of the Apes-films.
