De Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences heeft de shortlists voor een aantal Oscarcategorieën bekendgemaakt, waaronder voor Beste Internationale Film.

Nuestras madres van César Díaz, de Belgische inzending, heeft het niet gehaald en moest de duimen leggen voor onder meer Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite (Zuid-Korea), Pedro Almodóvars Dolor y gloria (Spanje), Ladj Ly’s Les misérables (Frankrijk), Mati Diops Atlantique (Sénégal) en Kantemir Bagalovs Beanpole (Rusland).

Wat de live-action-kortfilms betreft, zijn er twee Belgische inzendingen bij de laatste tien: Une sœur van Delphine Girard met Veerle Baetens en Les petites mains van Rémi Allier.
