Star Wars-sterren herdenken Chewbacca-acteur Peter Mayhew
Acteur Peter Mayhew is op 74-jarige leeftijd overleden. Hij gaf gestalte aan Chewbacca, de trouwe metgezel van Han Solo (Harrison Ford), in de Star Wars-films A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, Revenge of the Sith en The Force Awakens.
“Peter Mayhew was een lieve en zachtaardige man,” zei Ford. “We waren dertig jaar lang collega’s en vrienden en ik hield van hem. Hij heeft het personage zijn ziel gegeven. Ik en miljoenen anderen zullen hem nooit vergeten.”
Ook Star Wars-bedenker George Lucas bracht een laatste groet aan zijn goeie vriend: “Peter leek als geeenander op een Wookiee. Hij had een groot hart, was zacht van aard en ik heb geleerd om hem altijd te laten winnen.”
Mayhew werd opgevolgd door Joonas Suotamo in The Last Jedi en Solo: A Star Wars Story. Hij en zijn The Rise of Skywalker-collega’s Mark Hamill en Billy Dee Williams herdachten Mayhew op sociale media net als regisseurs J.J. Abrams (The Force Awakens, The Rise of Skywalker) en Rian Johnson (The Last Jedi).
