Nadat de Golden Globes en de BAFTA’s geen enkele vrouw nomineerden voor Beste Regisseur, heeft ook de Directors Guild of America vijf mannen genomineerd voor Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film for 2019.

Golden Globe-winnaars Sam Mendes (1917) en Quentin Tarantino (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) zullen het opnemen tegen Bong Joon-ho (Parasite), Martin Scorsese (The Irishman) en Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit).

In de categorie voor debuterende regisseurs werden echter drie vrouwen genomineerd, namelijk Mati Diop (Atlantique), Alma Har’el (Honey Boy) en Melina Matsoukas (Queen & Slim).

De Producers Guild of America nomineerde eveneens 1917, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Parasite, The Irishman en Jojo Rabbit voor de Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures, maar ook Greta Gerwigs Little Women.

Aangezien veel leden van de DGA en de PGA ook lid zijn van de Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences worden hun awards als belangrijke voorspellers van de Oscars beschouwd.

Zo wonnen de vorige zes winnaars van de Outstanding Directorial Achievement ook de Oscar voor Beste Regisseur en werden alle winnaars van de Darryl F. Zanuck Award sinds de eerste uitreiking in 1990 genomineerd voor de Oscar voor Beste Film. 21 daarvan namen het beeldje ook mee naar huis.
