In Dolemite Is My Name kruipt Eddie Murphy in de huid van acteur en stand-upcomedian Rudy Ray Moore, de hoofdrolspeler in een aantal blaxploitation-films rond de pooier en vechtjas Dolemite.

De biopic ging in wereldpremière tijdens het filmfestival van Toronto en is volgens Collider een energieke ode aan een gedreven entertainer.

The Wrap beschrijft de film als een blaxploitation-versie van Ed Wood of The Disaster Artist.

Daarentegen spreekt The Hollywood Reporter over een conventionele biopic ondanks enkele geslaagde grappen en verrassende anekdotes.
