Joss Whedon en James Gunn reageren op Martin Scorsese’s Marvel-uitspraken
Volgens Martin Scorsese zijn Marvel-films geen cinema omdat het publiek er niet emotioneel en psychologisch bij betrokken wordt. Daarom laat hij ze ook links liggen. Dat is hard aangekomen bij Marvel-regisseurs Joss Whedon (The Avengers) en James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy).
“Ik moet eerst een vooral denken aan James Gunn,” tweet Whedon, “en hoe hij van Guardians of the Galaxy zo’n persoonlijke film gemaakt heeft. Ik aanbid Marty en begrijp zijn punt, maar er is een reden waarom Hulk in The Avengers zegt dat hij altijd kwaad is.”
“Martin Scorsese is één van mijn vijf favoriete levende filmmakers,” schrijft Gunn. “Ik was verontwaardigd toen mensen die de film niet eens gezien hadden, protesteerden tegen The Last Temptation of Christ. Nu vind ik het jammer dat Scorsese mijn eigen films op dezelfde manier veroordeelt.”

And I’m not saying religious zealotry is the same as not liking my movies, or in the same category. What I’m saying is I’m not fond of people judging things without actually seeing them, whether it’s a movie about Jesus or a genre.
