De legendarische acteur Burt Reynolds is op 82-jarige leeftijd overleden. Dat meldt zijn manager. Reynolds carrière begon op het kleine scherm, maar uieindelijk groeide hij uit tot een waar filmicoon.

Na rollen in tv-series als Gunsmoke, Dan August en Evening Shade, waarvoor hij twee Emmys won, brak Reynolds door op het grote scherm met Deliverance. Daarna verscheen hij in tal van box-office-hits zoals The Longest Yard, Smokey and the Bandit en The Cannonball Run.

Zijn vertolking van pornoregisseur Jack Horner in Paul Thomas Andersons Boogie Nights leverde hem een Oscarnominatie voor beste acteur in een bijrol op.

Naast acteur was Reynolds ook regisseur en blikte onder meer de politiefilm Sharky’s Machine in, waarin hij tevens de hoofdrol speelde.

Onlangs werd hij nog gecast in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood als de eigenaar van de ranch waar sekteleider Charles Manson zijn hoofdkwartier van maakte. Reynolds’ scènes waren bij zijn overlijden helaas nog niet gedraaid.

Verschillende Hollywood-figuren, waaronder Reynolds Boogie Nights-tegenspeler Mark Wahlberg, reageerden met droefnis op het overlijden.

Burt Reynolds & Clint Eastwood were fired from GUNSMOKE & RAWHIDE at the same time. Burt was told he couldn't act and Clint his neck was too skinny. In the parking lot, Burt said to Clint, "I dunno what you're gonna do, but I'm gonna take acting lessons." #RIPBurtReynolds
