In Union Station te Los Angeles zijn op 25 april de 93e Academy Awards aka de Oscars uitgereikt. Nomadland is met drie stuks de grote winnaar geworden en kreeg Beste Film, Beste Regisseur (Chloé Zhao) en Beste Actrice (Frances McDormand).

Verschillende films wonnen elk twee Oscars, waaronder Sound of Metal van het Belgische productiehuis Caviar (Beste Geluid en Beste Montage) en Soul (Beste Animatiefilm en Beste Originele Score).

Verder sleepte Anthony Hopkins (The Father) de Oscar voor Beste Acteur in de wacht. Daniel Kaluuya (Judas and the Black Messiah) en Youn Yuh-Jung (Minari) gingen met Beste Acteur in een Bijrol en Beste Actrice in een Bijrol aan de haal.

In de categorie Beste Internationale Film moesten zowel The Man Who Sold His Skin met Koen De Bouw en Quo vadis, Aida? met Johan Heldenbergh de duimen leggen voor Thomas Vinterbergs Drunk.
