Dat regisseur Martin Scorsese een voorliefde heeft voor klassieke cinema maakt het onderstaande lijstje met zijn 85 favoriete films meteen duidelijk. De oudste film dateert bijvoorbeeld van 1903, de recentste één van 1996 en de rest schommelt rond de jaren vijftig.

Ook valt op dat enkele auteurs meerdere vermeldingen hebben en dus een grote indruk maakten op Scorsese. Zo staan er respectievelijk tien en vijf films van de Italiaanse filmmakers Roberto Rossellini en Luchino Visconti op het lijstje, zes van Robert Altman en Orson Welles en vier van hun collega’s Vincente Minnelli en Frank Capra.
