De Britse acteur Ian Holm is op achtentachtigjarige leeftijd overleden. Holm was vooral bekend van zijn rol als de android Ash in Ridley Scotts Alien en als Bilbo Baggins in Peter Jacksons The Lord of the Rings– en The Hobbit-films.

Verder kreeg Holm voor Chariots of Fire zowel in Cannes als tijdens de BAFTA’s de award voor Beste Acteur in een Bijrol. Hij hield ook een Oscarnominatie over aan de film.

Verder werkte Holm samen met Terry Gilliam aan Time Bandits en Brazil, met David Cronenberg aan Naked Lunch en eXistenz, met Woody Allen aan Another Woman, met Kenneth Branagh aan Henry V, met Atom Egoyan aan The Sweet Hereafter, met Luc Besson aan The Fifth Element en met Martin Scorsese aan The Aviator.
