De BBC, de Britse openbare omroep, vroeg 177 critici naar de beste films van de voorbije 16 jaar en distilleerde een tijdelijke top 100 van de beste films van de 21e eeuw.

Over het resultaat kan je natuurlijk discussiëren – waarom ontbreken Y tu mama tambien, Black Swan en Whiplash bijvoorbeeld? – maar de lijst bevat niettemin een excellente mix van genres en nationaliteiten.

De Coens, Christopher Nolan, Wes Anderson, Michael Haneke and Paul Thomas Anderson staan driemaal op de lijst, terwijl David Fincher, Abbas Kiarostami, Andrew Stanton and Terrence Malick twee keer terugkomen.

De conclusie van de BBC verdient alle lof: hoewel er in de 20e eeuw talloze klassiekers gedraaid werden, hoeft vroeger niet sowieso beter te zijn. Ook in de 21e eeuw passeerden al ettelijke meesterwerken de revue. Cinema is met andere woorden allesbehalve op sterven na dood.
