Naar jaarlijkse gewoonte grepen een aantal films en artiesten naast een Oscarnominatie. Zo werd Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods enkel voor Beste Originele Score genomineerd. Delroy Lindo werd nochtans lange tijd getipt voor Beste Acteur in een Bijrol.

Positief onthaalde films als Kelly Reichards First Cow, Eliza Hittmans Never Rarely Sometimes Always en Max Barbakows Palm Springs kregen geen nominaties.

Zowel One Night in Miami als Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom kregen meerdere Oscarnominaties, maar niet voor Beste Film en regisseurs Regina King en George C. Wolfe bleven in de kou staan.

Ook Aaron Sorkin (The Trial of the Chicago 7), Shaka King (Judas and the Black Messiah) en Florian Zeller (The Father) grepen naast een nominatie voor Beste Regisseur, hoewel de drie films in verschillende andere categorieën genomineerd werden.

Wat de acteerprijzen betreft, zijn de opvallende afwezigen Tom Hanks (News of the World), Ellen Burstyn (Pieces of a Woman), Ben Affleck (The Way Back), Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm), Kingsley Ben-Adir (One Night in Miami), Sophia Loren (The Life Ahead) en Michelle Pfeiffer (French Exit).

In de categorie Beste Documentaire ontbreken positief onthaalde films als Dick Johnson Is Dead, All In: The Fight for Democracy, The Painter and the Thief, Boys State, The Truffle Hunters, MLK/FBI en Welcome to Chechnya.
