De Belgisch-Ghanese kortfilm Da Yie van Anthony Nti staat op de shortlist voor de Oscars en maakt zo kans op een nominatie voor de Oscar voor Beste Kortfilm. De nominaties worden bekendgemaakt op 15 maart. De uitreiking van de Oscars vindt plaats op 25 april.

Anthony Nti is een jonge Antwerpse filmmaker die in 2016 al veel lof en een hele resem festivalselecties binnenhaalde met zijn RITCS-bachelorfilm Boi. Voor de opnames van zijn Da Yie ging hij draaien op locatie in zijn geboorteland Ghana.

Da Yie gaat over een vreemdeling die de opdracht krijgt om in Ghana kinderen te ronselen voor een risicovolle baan. Hij vindt er Prince en Mathilda, twee levendige kinderen, en brengt die naar zijn bende. Al snel begint hij zijn beslissing in twijfel te trekken, uit bezorgdheid over hoe dit het leven van de kinderen drastisch zou kunnen beïnvloeden…

De korte film van Anthony Nti was een hit in het internationale festivalcircuit. Op het Internationaal Kortfilmfestival van Clermont-Ferrand kreeg Da Yie in 2020 de Grand Prix van de Internationale Jury.

Dit jaar maakte Anthony Nti in Clermont-Ferrand zelf deel uit van de jury. Bij ons werd Da Yie vertoond in Gent en Leuven, op beide festivals viel hij in de prijzen.

Anthony Nti schreef het scenario voor Da Yie samen met Chingiz Karibekov. Ze produceerden de film ook samen, in coproductie met Caviar.

Nti was ook als coregisseur betrokken bij de productie van de Ketnet-reeks Hoodie. Hij werkte ook mee aan fictiereeks De Shaq. In december 2019 werd hij met zijn debuutfilmproject geselecteerd om deel te nemen aan Talent Village, een programma voor getalenteerde jonge filmmakers van het Filmfestival van Les Arcs.

Verder maakte de Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences ook de shortlists voor negen andere Oscarcategorieën bekend, waaronder Beste Internationale Film en Beste Originele Song.

De Belgische Oscarinzending Filles de joie heeft de shortlist voor Beste Internationale Film niet gehaald, maar de Bosnische inzending Quo vadis, Aida? met Johan Heldenbergh en de Tunesische inzending The Man Who Sold His Skin met Koen De Bouw zijn er nog bij.

Daarnaast maakt Sound of Metal van het Belgische productiehuis Caviar kans op de Oscar voor Beste Originele Song voor het nummer Green van componist Abraham Marder.
